Daisy Toh (b.1994, Singapore of Swatow descent) is currently pursuing her graduate studies MFA at Tainan National University of the Arts, Taiwan.
She received a 2011 Outstanding Performance in Drawing and Conceptual Thinking SOTA Award while studying Visual Arts (Ceramics) at the Singapore School of the Arts, and graduated with a BFA in Crafts and Design (Ceramics) in 2018 from the National Taiwan University of the Arts. She is the recipient of the 2018-2020 FRANZ Rising Star Award and Scholarship, which accorded her the opportunity to participate in the 2019 4th Révélations International Fine Craft and Creation Biennial in Paris and the 2019 FRANZ Park Artist-in-Residence Programme in JingDeZhen, the “porcelain capital” of China. She has also completed a residency at HO-CA clay arts studio in Tajimi, Japan, KLAY About Good Life Studio in Macau, and the International Ceramics Studio Residency at JingDeZhen Ceramics University JCU, China.
Daisy was one of the three finalists of the Affordable Art Fair (AAF) Singapore 2019/2020 Young Talent Programme, and has exhibited in Taiwan, France, China and Singapore. Daisy’s works reflect her patience, practice and artistry in adapting slip-casting, typically seen as a mass manufacturing process in ceramics, to create unique pieces that underscore the enduring relevance of traditional techniques and processes as well as impeccable craftsmanship. The potter’s fascination with coloured slip, commonly used as a decorative feature in the process of slip-casting, and with the manifold layers of craftsmanship hidden within the intricate, time-consuming process of slip-casting, has come to predominate her studio practice. Topographical lines demarcate each layer of exposed slip in her works, with the finished organic forms leading the viewer from one subtle element of interest – such as the gradations of colour – to another, like how a dip in the form might correspond to a change in the flow of slip and colour.
