Write-up of Ngee Ann Artist of the Year 2019 : Lim Soo Ngee

Lim Soo Ngee, whose ancestral origin is Kit Yang, Teochew, was born in 1962 in Singapore. He obtained a Diploma in Fine Arts, majoring in Sculpture from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts(NAFA) in 1989 and started teaching at the institution. He further completed his master course at Edinburgh College of Art in 1997. Currently, he is a senior lecturer at NAFA, where he has devoted 28 years to the teaching of art.

As a sculptor, Mr Lim has worked with a great variety of materials, He often applies traditional techniques in his wood carving, bronze casting and pigment colouring; but the expressive language of his creation, gave traditions a new meaning. He is capable of turning a piece of rustic wood into a thought-provoking contemporary artwork.

Mr Lim’s sculptures exude charm and common touch through its unveiled and truthful portrayal of the various characters, such as physical attribution, attire, accessory, posture and facial expression. He has a unique sense of humour and the grotesque way to bring the underlying personality and inner thoughts of his characters, which are often shaped by its surroundings, to life. His works ignite the viewers to behold different thoughts and feelings.

Mr Lim has represented Singapore in numerous local and international exhibitions, and is a regular contributor to many international sculpture symposiums. His works are collected by many local and international institutions, including the National Gallery Singapore, Esplanade Theatres on the Bay, Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, The Ngee Ann Kongsi, Inner Mongolia’s Asian Sculpture Theme Park and private collectors from Europe and Asia. His sculptures can also be found in various corners in our little red dot.
